Background

Being on a plane for so many hours can get boring, especially if the inflight entertainment isn't to your liking. But in a world integrated and operated by AI, it could help transform individuals' lives in more convenient ways. What if passengers could enjoy more personalized entertainment tailored to their tastes with the help of AI?

Challenge

How Might We provide passengers with entertainment on the plane that best suits their preferences?

Research

In exploring the reasons why people want customized products, two main motivations stand out: identity and function.

Customization for identity addresses the desire for expression and finding personal significance in a product.

On the other hand, customization for function emphasizes improving the product's usefulness and performance.

User Survey

User Interview

Based on the insights gained during the research phase, I have developed user scenarios to outline two primary scenarios that users may encounter during their airplane journey.

Define

People who can't find entertainment they like end up enjoying the rest of the flight on their own devices or forcing themselves to sleep. But what kind of platform or application do people who enjoy entertainment on their devices use to entertain themselves?

I decided to return to the interview phase and ask participants about their preferences for external platforms and entertainment options.

I utilized affinity mapping to identify patterns and discovered three main categories

๐Ÿ’œ Issues they faced.

๐Ÿงก What they think is good.

๐Ÿ’š What they like to do.

The main issues people faced :

๐Ÿ’œ Limited Entertainment Options

๐Ÿงก Unclear Instructions (buttons etc.)

๐Ÿ’š Poor-quality Headphones

Things people are satisfied with in existing inflight entertainment system :

๐Ÿ’œ Screen Size

๐Ÿงก Simple Interface

What people like to do :

๐Ÿ’œ Series / Movie : Netflix / Disney+

๐Ÿงก Games : Nintendo / Phone

๐Ÿ’š Books / E-book : Physical Book / Webtoon / Kindle

๐Ÿ’™ Music : Apple Music / Spotify / YouTube Music

After identifying patterns from the insights, I developed personas to immerse myself in the mindset of users, understanding their behaviors, attitudes, and emotions.

Based on the persona I created, I also visualized Ryan's user journey to grasp his thoughts and emotions at each phase of his journey.

Opportunities Exploration

I explored potential opportunities on how might we enhance the in-flight entertainment system, focusing on improvements in both internal and external systems.

Issues to consider

During the exploration I also came across some issues to be consider which are :

Security Concerns : How can users secure the connection between their devices and the inflight screen?

Accessibility : How can users easily type and input information into the inflight screen?

Solution

The solution I developed to address these issues is

Connect devices to the inflight screen

๐Ÿ’œ Users can connect their device to the in-flight screen by entering the security code displayed on their personal device into the screen to secure the connection.
๐Ÿงก Users can directly type from their device to input information on the screen.

For the visual design, my goal was to create an interface that evokes the feeling of flying and exploration while maintaining a modern, innovative aesthetic.

Style Guide

Final Design

In addition to tailored entertainment, I applied the same personalized approach to other search engines, such as those for discovering food and places to visit.
